The list of incident categories below should be used as a guide only. This list is not exhaustive - there may be incidents which occur that are not detailed below and which should be reported.

These categories and sub-categories are used by the OTS to assist in the department's reporting and analysis of security-related incidents.

Incident Category Explanation Sub Categories
Aircraft
The following incident types have been grouped under the heading "Aircraft" as they relate specifically to incidents that impact directly on an aircraft or its operations. These events are grouped together as the focus of these events is the aircraft.
  • Laser Light
  • Tampering with Aircraft
  • Sabotage - Aircraft
  • Unattended or Unsecured Aircraft
  • Hijack Alert
  • False Travel documentation - attempt to board aircraft
  • Unauthorised access - Aircraft
 
   
Breach/ Intrusion
The following incident types have been grouped under the heading 'Breach/Intrusion' as they relate specifically to incidents where there has been a violation of an airports secure environment (Sterile Area, Landside Security Zone, Security Restricted Area and Airside Security Zone).
These events are grouped together as the focus of these events is the secure environment of an airport.
  • Perimeter Breach
  • Perimeter Damage
  • Unauthorised access - ASZ/SRA
  • Sterile Area Breach
  • Unsecured Doors/Gates
  • Forced Door
 
   
Criminal
The following incident types have been grouped under the heading 'Criminal' as they relate specifically to acts of a criminal nature.
These events are grouped together as criminal nature has the potential to highlight vulnerabilities in the security regime.
  • Assault
  • Criminal Activity
  • Sabotage - Airport
 
   
Public Behaviour

The following incident types have been grouped under the heading 'Public Behaviour' as they relate specifically to incidents regarding the behaviour of the travelling public.

These events are grouped together as the focus of these events is unusual behaviour by the public.

  • Disruptive person at Airport
  • Disruptive person on Aircraft
  • Suspicious person
  • Inappropriate Comment
 
   
Screening Events

The following incident types have been grouped under the heading 'Screening Events' as they relate specifically to incidents involving screening procedures and processes.

These events are grouped together as the focus of these events is effectiveness of the screening processes undertaken at an airport.

  • Liquids, Aerosols and Gels
  • Prohibited item detected at screening point
  • Prohibited item in a sterile area
  • Prohibited item on-board aircraft
  • Other prohibited item
  • Positive ETD
  • Screening Refusal
 
   
Staff/ Procedural

The following incident types have been grouped under the heading 'Staff/Procedural' as they relate specifically to incidents involving failure of Security Procedures.

These events are grouped together as the focus of these events is corruption of security procedures from an internal source.

  • ASIC Incident
  • Loss of Keys/ Access cards
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Failure of Staff Procedure/ Protocol
  • Security System Failure
 
   
Suspicious Items

The following incident types have been grouped under the heading 'Suspicious Items' as they relate specifically to items that are of a suspicious nature (unusual, unaccountable, questionable).

These events are grouped together as the focus of these events is unusual items in the security environment.

  • Suspicious item in terminal
  • Suspicious Vehicle
  • Suspicious item on-board aircraft
  • Chemical/ biological/ radiological
 
   
Threats
The following incident types have been grouped under the heading 'Threats' as they relate specifically to incidents where there has been an intention or declaration made to undertake some course of action (menace) against an aircraft or airport.
  • Communication of threat against an Airport
  • Communication of threat against an Aircraft
