Importation of converted vehicles under the pre-1989 scheme

The Department has received applications to import converted vehicles under the pre-1989 scheme. This includes replica cars, drag racing cars and hot rods. It is important that you read this summary of the pre-1989 scheme before you consider importing a converted vehicle into Australia.

New Arrangements on importing small road trailers

New regulations amended the Motor Vehicle Standards Regulations 1989 in November 2009.  The new regulations are the Motor Vehicle Standards Amendment Regulations 2009 (No. 1), and are available here.  This link also includes a link to the Explanatory Statement

Important Announcement: Vehicles returning to Australia

The Department has recently made changes to the arrangements for the importation of road vehicles that were previously classified as returning Australian goods by the Australian Custom and Border Protection Service.

Importation of Replica Vespa Motor Scooters manufactured before 1 January 1989

The Department has received a number of Vehicle Import Applications (VIAs) where it is claimed that replica Vespas were manufactured prior to 1 January 1989, when in fact it was manufactured (this includes remanufactured vehicles) after this date.

It is important that you read this announcement before you consider importing a Vespa into Australia.

Importation of Mini Choppers

These motorbikes are not eligible to be imported in to Australia unless they meet the Australian Design Rules for Motor Vehicles. Refer to the announcement for further details.
