In July 2009 the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed that a single national heavy vehicle regulator will be established at the end of 2012 to regulate all vehicles over 4.5 gross tonnes.
This Scheme was designed to provide uniform charges and operating conditions for heavy vehicles engaged solely in interstate operations. For detailed information please follow this link.
The Australian Road Rules were implemented in 1999 and have been regularly updated since then. Each state and territory adopts the Australian Road Rules in its own legislation.
The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development participates in the Austroads Registration and Licensing Task Force, which brings together state and territory vehicle registration and driver licensing authorities.
