Australian Maritime Safety Authority
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is a statutory authority established under the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Act 1990 (AMSA Act). It is governed by the Commonwealth Authorities and Companies Act 1997 (CAC Act).
AMSA is an agency within the transport portfolio. AMSA's primary role is in maritime safety, protection of the marine environment and maritime and aviation search and rescue services.
AMSA represents Australia at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other international forums in the development, implementation and enforcement of international standards including those governing ship safety and marine environment protection.
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government has a coordination and oversight role in relation to advising AMSA about government policy on administrative arrangements, financial and taxation matters, and corporate governance.
AMSA's structure is based on three operational business units, Maritime Safety and Environmental Strategy, Maritime Operations and Emergency Response supported by the Corporate Business Unit.
