Major Cities Unit

The Australian Government is committed to forging a fairer, more prosperous and resilient future for Australia. The Major Cities Unit provides advice to the Australian Government on issues of policy, planning and infrastructure that have an impact on our cities and suburbs. It also provides coordinated action across government, the private sector and the community, to help secure the nation's economic, environmental and social wellbeing in our major cities.

Publications

	State of Australian Cities 2012 State of Australian Cities 2012 brings together current research and data to present a comprehensive snapshot of Australia’s major cities. It is the third in a series of annual Australian Government publications reporting on the progress of Australian cities towards the goals and objectives of the National Urban Policy.
	Walking, Riding and Access to Public Transport Walking, Riding and Access to Public Transport: draft report for discussion explores how the Australian Government can work with other governments, business and the community to encourage and support walking and riding as part of the transport systems in Australia's cities and towns. Views on the report were sought to guide the Department's policy development process.
	State of Australian Cities 2011 State of Australian Cities 2011 Report is the second report in a series of annual Australian Government publications detailing the progress of Australian cities towards the goals and objectives of the National Urban Policy.
	National Urban Policy Our Cities, Our Future—A National Urban Policy for a productive, sustainable and liveable future was released in May 2011. It sets in place the Australian Government's objectives and directions for our cities as we prepare for the decades ahead.
	Discussion Paper Our Cities—building a productive, sustainable and liveable future, the discussion paper for the National Urban Policy, was released in December 2010. The discussion paper was designed to frame the Australian Government's policy approach to cities as the basis for the National Urban Policy.
	Our Cities Background and Research Paper Our Cities—the challenge of change was released in 2010 and accompanies the discussion paper. The paper presents the options the Australian government considered in preparation for a national approach to improve the wellbeing and prosperity of communities within our cities.
	State of Australian Cities 2010 State of Australian Cities 2010 report was the first publication in the series and provides a national snapshot of the seventeen Australian cities with populations over 100,000 at the date of the 2006 Census. It draws together data and information across a range of economic, social and environmental parameters.
