The Australian Government's December 2008 and February 2009 announcements were designed to provide strong and decisive action to support jobs and insulate the Australian economy from the worst of the global downturn. These announcements, collectively known as The Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan, make an unprecedented investment in Australia's long-term infrastructure needs and provide the jobs and capital funding to keep Australia's economy running.
The Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan will help Australia's economic growth by providing major new funding for individual initiatives such as first home owners grants and solar hot water rebates; capital works programs including new science and language centres in 500 Australian schools; and significant infrastructure projects such as road and rail upgrades.
Many of the programs funded by the Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan are being administered by the Department of Transport, Infrastructure, Regional Development and Local Government. These include:
-
$711 million in funding has been brought forward as part of the Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan to accelerate 14 road projects.
-
$150 million in funding has been allocated to the installation of over 290 new boom gates and other safety measures at high risk rail crossings as part of the Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan.
-
Funding of $150 million has been allocated as part of the Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan for safety improvement projects under the Black Spot Program.
Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program projects
$250 million has been allocated to Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program projects and a further $550 to Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program Strategic Projects as part of two funding packages announced in November 2008 and February 2009.
East Kimberley Development Package
The Australian Government has allocated $195 million to the East Kimberley Development Package under the Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan.
