Tips for Applying

You know that you’re capable; the key is to make sure we see it too. So here’s some information about our selection process and how to make sure your application gives you the IN with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport.
The process for the selection of graduates is in several stages and shortlisting will be conducted after each stage:
Written Application
To begin with, you’ll be asked to complete your application online.Our tips:
- Type your responses using a program like Word so you can thoroughly check for spelling, grammar, missing words and punctuation without feeling rushed. You can then copy and paste your responses into the online form.
- Make sure you proofread your application—you must make a good first impression.
- Address all of the selection criteria, and stay within the 300 word limit. Use good examples of your work, study and life experience from recent years to show us you have what we’re looking for. In your answer, make sure you cover the information we ask for in the bullet points under the question.
- Most important: make sure you answer the question being asked!
For help with addressing selection criteria check out the Cracking the Code fact sheet published by the Australian Public Service Commission.
Online Ability Test
If we’re interested to find out more about you, you’ll be asked to complete an online ability test.Our tips:
- Get comfortable;
- Make sure you’re free from distraction; and
- Be sure to work alone for the duration of the assessment.
Assessment Centres
If you’re successful in making it through the written application you will be invited to an assessment centre. The assessment centre will include:
- A written test;
- Group activity; and
- Interview.
More information about the assessment process will be provided to you if you are selected for interview.
Our tips:
- You’ll be on show. Dress appropriately and be on time.
- Do your research. Make sure you’re in touch with the role of the Department, its sections and the programs it delivers. Our website is a great source of information.
- Be yourself, and sell yourself. This is your IN!
It’s also important to remember that the selection panel will be looking to select applicants who are enthusiastic, driven, innovative, qualified and the most suitable to join their areas.
How to Apply
Applying is easy! Applications will open for the 2013 program on Monday 5 March 2012 and close on Friday 13 April 2012 at 11:30pm.
